"I've had nothing but great experiences with Mr. Johnson. He is smart, innovative, and all of my students loved working with him. Hands down, he's the best."

Debbie Bygland 4th Grade Teacher

""Mr. Johnson has helped my son tremendously. He's more confident and doing much better with his reading and math."

Clair Parent of 5th Grade Student

What to Expect

Before you decide to tutor with me, I offer a free introductory session. This is a one-hour session where I will meet with you and your student. During this time, I will start to build a rapport with your student, learning what their likes and interests are, how they feel about school and learning, their hobbies etc. so that I can start building an individual learning plan that best fits your student. This first step is important so that your student will become open with their learning and will feel comfortable working with me. When your student feels comfortable, capable and supported I will be able to help them attain their best results.

After talking with your student, I will have your student show me what they are capable of. I will start by having them answer grade level math problems to see how they are doing at their grade level. Then, they will show me math work from previous grade levels to see if there are any gaps in their knowledge that need to be filled and to get an idea of how strong their foundational understanding is. After, I will fit in a teaching opportunity so that I can get a sense of how they will work with me. After math I will have them read to me so that I can determine the student's reading level, word recognition, vocabulary, reciprocity and comprehension. Then I will have your student show me any other subject that they may need support in. During this time if you have any of their school work that I can observe, I will be able to see what they are turning in and what their teacher is expecting from your student. This information will make sure that the support I am giving them will flow with the student's class work and teachers expectations. While working with your student I will be discovering your student’s strengths and areas that need support.

After working with your student, I will talk with you about your goals for your student, any concerns you may have, and any insights that you can share. This is important, as you have known your student the longest, know what motivates them and discourages them, you know their work habits and can identify any stress they may carry. With all of this information I will be able to form a tutoring plan and recommendation that works best for your student. Then, we will talk about what works best for you and your family for moving forward and some strategies that you can utilize at home to help your student. Then, if your choice is to add me to your team, we will talk about scheduling sessions and what you will need moving forward so that my time with your student will be optimal and your student will get the most out of tutoring with me.

Cancellation Policy

Lets get this issue right out in the open. Any cancellation done 24 hours before the scheduled lesson will, unfortunately, come without a refund or rescheduling.

Cancellations made with more than 24 hour notice will be allowed to reschedule their session on a date and time arranged with me. There will be no refunds.

If I cancel an appointment you will have the choice of a refund of your money or to have your appointment moved to another day.

What is Virtual tutoring like?

When you set up your Introductory session you will receive a link to either Zoom or Google Meet. On the day of your session around 5 minutes before your appointed time you will log onto the site with your link. Then, I will let your student into the room. If you have trouble logging in contact me so I can help you through the log in. I will walk your student through how everything works and help to make them comfortable with the technology. Then we will go through the introductory session.

Once you decide to book a tutoring session your student, they will log on just like they did for the introductory session. Then I will begin our session. For math, the students will see a white board on the screen that we will work with to solve problems and also for instruction. For reading the student will see the article that I want them to read and we will work on reading and comprehension. If your student has a homework question, they will share their screen with me and I will help them as they work. This is the generic set up.  Your student may have different work that we are working on but it will follow the same format.

At the end of the session I will take any question from you or your student and give some suggestions during the time before our next session.

What you'll need to get started!

Got a question? Reach out to me i'd be happy to work with you.
  • Virtual Platform Option #1 Zoom

Tutoring With Mr. Johnson is an online tutoring service. One of the primary tools that I use to support your students is Zoom video conferencing. All that you need to do is download the app. You do not need pay for any Zoom service, I have taken care of that. Zoom is completely safe for your students to use. No one can get into a session without the link that I have provided you and no one can get in without my permission. I can also remove anyone at any time.

Zoom provides me a workable platform where I can see the students, watch them work live and give them assignments to work on. With the touch of a button your students can show me their screen, allowing me to see their homework, virtual textbooks and any other assignments so that I can tutor them in what they are doing in class and have a clear understanding of what is happening in their daily school work.

All Zoom sessions will be recorded.

  • Virtual Platform Option #2 Google Hangout

Tutoring With Mr. Johnson is an online tutoring service. One of the primary tools that I use to support your students is Google Meet video conferencing. You do not need to do anything to access Google Meet other then click on the link you are sent. You will need to email me to receive your link 15 minutes before our session as Google Meet links are not sent with our automated system.

Google Hangout is the second option that I offer. Google Hangout offers most of the same tools that Zoom does. Google Hangout does not allow for the students to work on items on my screen which limits what I can do with the students. This platform has worked well for tutoring and is a good secondary option.

All Google Meet sessions will be recorded.

  • Computer with a Webcam

I need to be able to see your student to read facial expressions, see work they may do on paper and to make sure they are focusing.

  • Type of Space

The student needs a quiet place for the hour so that they can stay focused and have limited distractions.

  • Microphone & Earphones

Have a microphone in your computer or headset so that I can talk with your student.

Earphones are optional but help limit background noise and keep the students focused.

  • Something to write with

I recomend small to meduim white bords as students love working with them.

But any writing surface will work.
